In 1996, "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" began, which was about a family who take in their nephew as apart of their family. The gender roles demonstrated were very common for the time, with both parents working, and with the mother and the father having the authoritative position. This show is different from other shows because the family is black, and therefore throughout the series face racial issues that they fix as a family.
The hit TV show "Modern Family", consists of three different families who are all related in one way or another. In this show, they take a more modern twist on gender roles, and they demonstrate some of the most common gender roles in today's world. In one family, there is a working father and a stay-at-home mother who, if she ever was going to work, would work at home, and who takes care of the kids. In another family, there is a very wealthy man who married a divorced columbian woman with a son. This also portrays the typical gender roles of a working father figure and a 'trophy wife', meaning a non-working mother who stays at home and takes care of the kids. The last family is two gay, married men. Since gay marriage recently became legal, this example is becoming more and more popular. Even though they are both men, one of the men is more of the father figure, working as a lawyer and making money for the family, while the other stays home to take care of their adopted child. This show depicts three different, yet very traditional gender roles in today's society.
"Full House" is a television show that came out in 1987, and it shows 3 different male members of the family who all work and take care of the kids. This show does not follow the traditional gender roles, and it demonstrates the men taking on both parental roles while the women go to work. This show also was all about teaching lessons. An episode would usually begin with some sort of issue and as it continued, the family would work together to solve that issue.
